The Coalition of Open Access Repositories (COAR) and the University of Minho Libraries have announced the launch of COAR Notify on the DSpace platform. This new functionality allows repositories to send and receive messages to other 'Notify-enabled' platforms, enhancing the interlinking of related resources within the scholarly ecosystem. Any repository utilizing DSpace version 7.6 or 8 can now take advantage of COAR Notify.
COAR Notify leverages linked data notifications and activity streams, facilitating seamless interactions between services and contributing to a more coherent and interconnected landscape for research outputs. This innovative tool aims to strengthen collaboration and improve the discoverability of scholarly resources.
COAR Notify currently offers two primary use cases for DSpace users:
• Peer Review Requests: Authors can now request reviews from external peer review services or overlay journals directly through the DSpace platform.
• Connecting Articles and Datasets: Authors can easily link their articles to related research datasets housed in other repositories, fostering greater collaboration and transparency in research.
The development of COAR Notify within DSpace was executed by 4Science, a certified Platinum DSpace service provider. This integration includes the addition of COAR Notify messages into the repository manager dashboard, allowing users to monitor and manage notifications effectively. Detailed information about the features and functionalities of COAR Notify is available on the 4Science website.
COAR Notify is already operational in the Dataverse platform, with ongoing development in ePrints and Zenodo. Additionally, integration efforts are underway with various peer review systems, including Peer Community In (PCI), eLife, and PREreview. A comprehensive list of implementations can be found in the COAR Notify catalogue.
The introduction of COAR Notify represents a significant advancement in the capabilities of DSpace, providing researchers and institutions with powerful tools to enhance collaboration and improve the accessibility of scholarly outputs.
