The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Marcel LaFlamme as the new director of Research Policy and Scholarship, effective November 12, 2024. Marcel, who currently serves as an open research manager at the Public Library of Science (PLOS), brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to advancing open scholarship.
Marcel is recognized as a scholarly communication professional dedicated to fostering evidence-based approaches and building consensus for an equitable transition to open scholarship. His extensive background in libraries, publishing, and scholarly societies equips him with a nuanced understanding of the unique needs of research communities. This insight is expected to greatly benefit ARL as it aims to bridge policy and practice in the evolving landscape of research and scholarship.
In his role as ARL's director of Research Policy and Scholarship, Marcel will oversee the Association’s Scholars and Scholarship portfolio. This portfolio encompasses key areas of focus, including data-intensive and technologically enabled scholarship, such as artificial intelligence, innovative publishing methods, open science, and community-engaged scholarship. ARL's collaboration with higher education, research, and policymaking communities will be vital as these issues continue to gain prominence.
Before joining PLOS, Marcel was a postdoctoral researcher at the LBG Open Innovation in Science Center in Vienna, Austria.
As ARL moves forward under Marcel's leadership, the Association looks to enhance its efforts in promoting innovative research practices and equitable access to scholarship, reflecting the changing needs of the academic and research communities it serves.
