Dr. Katherine Van Loon appointed Editor-in-Chief of JCO Global Oncology -

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has appointed Dr. Katherine Van Loon as the new Editor-in-Chief of JCO Global Oncology (JCO GO), ASCO's open-access journal focused on cancer care, research, and delivery in low-resource settings worldwide. Dr. Van Loon, an esteemed medical oncologist and researcher, will officially take on the role starting February 1, 2025.

Dr. Van Loon currently serves as the Director of the Global Cancer Program at UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she leads research initiatives, capacity-building projects, and educational programs aimed at advancing global oncology in low- and middle-income countries. Her research primarily focuses on gastrointestinal cancers, with a commitment to improving outcomes and addressing disparities in under-resourced regions.

An accomplished academic, Dr. Van Loon holds a Master of Public Health from Yale University and completed her medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia. Following her residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and fellowship at UCSF, she joined the UCSF faculty in 2012. Dr. Van Loon is also active in the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) and co-founded the African Esophageal Cancer Consortium (AfrECC).

In addition to her global health work, Dr. Van Loon is an advocate for women’s leadership in global health and is a 2021 alumna of the WomenLift Health Leadership Journey. She has published over 100 articles and has received numerous awards for her contributions to research mentorship and global cancer training.

Dr. Van Loon’s appointment aligns with JCO GO’s mission to support healthcare professionals in low-resource settings by providing access to high-quality, relevant oncology research.
