The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has announced the release of an updated version of the Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) Standard, Version 1.4 (ANSI/NISO Z39.96-2024). This revision, the first since 2019, refines the XML structures that define journal article content, facilitating consistent exchange between publishers and archives worldwide.
JATS provides a standard XML framework to capture the structural and semantic components of journal articles, ensuring that intellectual content is preserved regardless of its original format. It is widely adopted by journal publishers, archives, and service providers to support long-term content management and seamless integration across publishing platforms. The JATS 1.4 update introduces new modifications that reflect evolving scholarly communication needs and advances in content preservation.
The updated JATS 1.4 standard is accessible for free on the NISO website at https://niso.org/standards-committees/jats. To provide further insights into the changes, NISO will host an Open Teleconference on November 18 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time (US/Canada), offering a platform for community discussion and questions.
