Public Knowledge Project joins the Open Book Collective to advance open access initiatives -

The Public Knowledge Project (PKP), an influential research and software development initiative based at Simon Fraser University, has joined the Open Book Collective (OBC) to strengthen its efforts in advancing open access (OA) publishing. Known for its free and open-source software (FOSS) solutions, PKP supports global scholarly publishing through platforms like Open Monograph Press (OMP), Open Journal Systems (OJS), and Open Preprint Systems (OPS).

The OBC, which fosters a diverse and sustainable future for OA publishing, collaborates with service providers aligned with its vision of inclusivity, quality, and accessibility in scholarly publishing. By joining, PKP adds its expertise and resources to the OBC’s mission, contributing to a shared goal of moving away from Book Processing Charges (BPCs) and fostering non-competitive, collective funding models. The partnership allows PKP to work alongside other like-minded initiatives, helping libraries, authors, and readers navigate OA resources and identify trusted publishers.

PKP's ongoing efforts include the PKP-OMP Supporter Program, aimed at advancing OMP functionalities for improved usability, accessibility, and integration with indexing services, thus enhancing the visibility of OA books. The program also provides educational resources for emerging OA book publishers, supporting community growth and promoting accessible scholarly communication.

With this collaboration, PKP and the OBC are poised to make a lasting impact on the open access landscape, championing a future where OA publishing is both fair and sustainable.
