HEPI releases policy note on accelerating translational research for societal impact -

The Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) has published a new policy note titled Advancing Translational Research (Policy Note 57), exploring the critical role of turning academic discoveries into practical, real-world solutions. Authored by Lan Murdock, Senior Corporate Communications Manager at Taylor & Francis, and Rose Stephenson, Director of Policy and Advocacy at HEPI, the report includes a foreword by Baroness (Margaret) Hodge of Barking.

The publication arrives at a pivotal moment, with the UK's new government under Prime Minister Keir Starmer prioritizing evidence-based policy and practical outcomes. The report underscores the growing importance of translational research, traditionally associated with the biomedical sciences, and highlights its expanding influence across fields like social sciences and humanities to address complex societal challenges.

The policy note defines translational research as the process of converting basic research knowledge into tangible applications, aimed at improving human well-being and addressing real-world problems. By adopting a goal-oriented approach from the initial stages of research design, this method fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration with the potential to drive significant societal change.

Key Findings include: Definition & Importance: Translational research seeks to bridge the gap between academic discovery and practical application, fostering collaboration across various disciplines to solve pressing societal issues; Challenges: The field faces numerous barriers, including regulatory, financial, infrastructural, and cultural challenges. Overcoming these obstacles requires innovative solutions and collective action; and Role of Publishers: The report highlights how academic publishers can support the translation of research by enhancing access to scientific knowledge, encouraging cross-disciplinary collaborations, and promoting the practical application of research findings.

The report outlines actionable recommendations for academia, funders, institutions, and publishers:

1. For Academia and Research Institutions: Develop comprehensive frameworks to plan, deliver, and assess translational research; Provide training and mentorship programs to equip researchers with the skills needed for effective translation; and Incentivize researchers who engage in translational research by recognizing their contributions in academic evaluations.

2. For Funders and Decision-Makers: Diversify funding strategies, especially for the early and intermediate stages of translational research; Align funding policies across different types of funders to streamline support; and Create adaptable funding programs to address the unique challenges of translational research.

3. For Institutions: Enhance infrastructure, facilities, and equipment to support the research translation process; Foster greater stakeholder and end-user engagement throughout the research lifecycle; and Acknowledge and reward collaborative team efforts in research evaluations.

4. For Publishers: Innovate with new content formats that make research more accessible to diverse audiences; Build platforms that connect academia, industry, and the public to encourage cross-sector dialogue; and Adopt standards and tools to increase the visibility and impact of translational research outcomes.

The report includes a case study from the automotive industry, demonstrating the power of translational research to create impactful innovations, such as technologies that reduce CO₂ emissions.
