The American Geophysical Union (AGU) has announced the appointment of new Editors-in-Chief for five of its journals, effective in 2025. This marks an exciting new phase for AGU’s publications program, continuing the strong editorial leadership that has shaped these journals over the years.
The new appointments reflect AGU's ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of its journals. Four of the incoming Editors-in-Chief are set to continue the excellent work of their predecessors, while Enrico Camporeale, the Founding Editor-in-Chief of JGR: Machine Learning and Computation, will remain in his role for a full term.
AGU acknowledges the significant contributions of the outgoing Editors-in-Chief. Susan Trumbore of the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, Germany, served as the Editor-in-Chief of AGU Advances from 2019 to 2024. Harihar Rajaram of Johns Hopkins University led Geophysical Research Letters until mid-2024, followed by Minghua Zhang of Stony Brook University, who served as interim Editor-in-Chief for the second half of the year. Amy East of the United States Geological Survey concluded her term as the Editor-in-Chief of JGR: Earth Surface, and Sana Salous from Durham University completed her leadership of Radio Science.
The incoming Editors-in-Chief are Alberto Montanari from the University of Bologna, Italy, who will lead AGU Advances; Kristopher B. Karnauskas from the University of Colorado Boulder, USA, who will take over Geophysical Research Letters; Ann Rowan from the University of Bergen, Norway, who will become Editor-in-Chief of JGR: Earth Surface; Enrico Camporeale, affiliated with Queen Mary University of London and the CIRES University of Colorado Boulder, who will continue his leadership of JGR: Machine Learning and Computation; and Kazuya Kobayashi from Chuo University, Japan, who will lead Radio Science.
The selection process for the new Editors-in-Chief followed an open call, managed by committees appointed by the AGU Council Leadership Team, in collaboration with the AGU Publications Committee and staff. The Council Leadership Team granted final approval for the appointments.
These new appointments will continue to advance AGU’s mission of publishing impactful, high-quality research in the geophysical sciences, fostering collaboration and innovation within the global scientific community.
