The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) is proud to unveil the EPIC Awards, a prestigious new program designed to celebrate outstanding achievements in scholarly publishing, information technology, and communications. Open to both SSP members and non-members, the awards aim to highlight exceptional work across a variety of categories, spotlighting the innovation and dedication that are shaping the future of scholarly communication.
The EPIC Awards were established to honor organizations and teams driving advancements in the industry through creativity, technological breakthroughs, and impactful initiatives. By setting a benchmark for excellence, the awards seek to inspire others within the scholarly publishing community to push boundaries and achieve new heights.
Award categories span key areas of scholarly publishing:
• Tools and Products: Celebrating technological innovations like submission platforms, hosting solutions, and author integrity tools.
• Publications: Recognizing exceptional work in journals, books, reports, and other content formats.
• Marketing: Highlighting achievements in branding, social media, and promotional strategies.
• Media: Honoring original multimedia projects, including videos, podcasts, and data visualizations.
• Initiatives: Showcasing programs advancing diversity, equity, accessibility, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and other societal priorities.
Submissions will be rigorously evaluated by a panel of seasoned professionals from across the scholarly community. The top two entries in each category will be recognized, with special awards dedicated to student-led publications, emphasizing the value of emerging voices in the industry.
The submission period opens on December 1, 2024, and closes on January 15, 2025. Full details, including entry guidelines, submission criteria, and judging standards, are available on the SSP website. Individuals interested in serving as judges can also apply starting December 1, 2024.
Winners of the EPIC Awards will be announced during the SSP Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD, from May 28-30, 2025. Award recipients and finalists will be honored at the EPIC Awards Gala, an evening dedicated to celebrating the invaluable contributions of the scholarly communications community.
