Springer Nature and the University of Tokyo are joining forces to host the 2025 SDGs Symposium, a landmark event addressing the theme “Tackling Inequalities for Sustainability and Wellbeing.” Scheduled for February 8, 2025, the symposium will bring together prominent researchers and practitioners to explore the role of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing inequalities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As the global community intensifies efforts to achieve sustainable development, entrenched inequalities remain a significant barrier. Inequality within and between societies complicates progress towards sustainability and wellbeing, requiring multifaceted solutions and innovative research.
The 2025 SDGs Symposium aims to tackle this challenge by focusing on SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), alongside other interrelated SDGs. Researchers will present actionable insights, bridging the gap between theoretical frameworks and real-world applications to foster equitable solutions.
The symposium will feature presentations and discussions with distinguished speakers, including:
• Sawako Shirahase – Project Professor at The University of Tokyo and Senior Vice President at the United Nations University.
• Magdalena Skipper – Editor-in-Chief of Nature and Chief Editorial Advisor for the Nature Portfolio.
• Shunsuke Managi – Distinguished Professor at Kyushu University.
• Yasushi Ishihara – President of Tsukuba University of Technology.
• Etsuko Yamaguchi – Executive Director of the Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP).
• Takane Ito – Director and Project Professor at the UTokyo Center for the Coproduction of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (IncluDE).
The program will explore cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and actionable strategies for addressing inequalities in sustainability initiatives.
Registration for the symposium is free and open to anyone interested in sustainability research and solutions. Attendees can look forward to keynote presentations, discussions, and a student poster session, showcasing innovative ideas from emerging scholars. The deadline for poster submissions is January 22, 2025.
This symposium marks the sixth collaboration between Springer Nature and the University of Tokyo on SDG-focused events. It underscores Springer Nature’s dedication to advancing sustainability through interdisciplinary research and partnerships.
