The OA2020 Initiative, coordinated by the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL), will host the 17th Berlin Open Access Conference (B17) on February 5-6, 2025, at Harnack House in Berlin. The event, titled "Moving OA Forward: From Transformation to Collective Responsibility," will focus on the next phase of the open access transition in science communication.
B17 will unite over 40 countries' negotiators and institutional leaders to discuss how to advance open access (OA) for the global research community. With MPDL’s leadership, more than 90% of research from its institutes is now published openly, showcasing the success of transformative OA agreements. Despite these advancements, challenges remain—particularly ensuring authors, regardless of financial background, can publish based on the quality of their work, free from financial barriers.
As AI technologies reshape the landscape of science communication, safeguarding author rights and ensuring publishing integrity are also key topics for discussion. Co-chaired by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Pöschl and Prof. Dr. Gerard Meijer, B17 aims to unite stakeholders, align shared principles, and outline concrete steps to build a more inclusive, open science ecosystem.
