ASM welcomes new editors in chief to lead prominent microbiology journals -

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has announced the appointment of four new Editors in Chief (EiC) for its leading journals, effective July 1, 2025. Romney Humphries, Ph.D., D(ABMM), will take the helm of Journal of Clinical Microbiology® (JCM); Marvin Whiteley, Ph.D., will lead mBio®; Ashley Shade, Ph.D., will assume the role for mSystems®; and Ira Blader, Ph.D., will become EiC for mSphere®.

Dr. Humphries, a professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, brings expertise in clinical microbiology and antimicrobial resistance to JCM. Dr. Whiteley, a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, is known for his research on bacterial infections and antimicrobial tolerance, continuing his leadership role in mBio. Dr. Shade, Director of Research at CNRS, has been a key figure in the development of mSystems, focusing on systems microbiology and its impact on environmental resilience. Dr. Blader, a professor at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, will lead mSphere, advancing research on microbial pathogenesis and eukaryotic cell interactions.

These incoming EiCs are committed to advancing the global impact of ASM journals, supporting early-career scientists, and promoting collaboration across microbiology disciplines. Their leadership will continue to enhance the reach and influence of ASM's high-impact journals in the scientific community.
