UKRI launches guide to support open access publishing for small and specialist book publishers -

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has unveiled a comprehensive guide aimed at helping book publishers transition to sustainable open access (OA) models. The new resource is specifically designed for learned society, subject association, and smaller specialist publishers, offering clear steps for successfully adopting OA in the book publishing sector.

The guide, titled ‘How to Begin the OA Transition: A Guide for Smaller and Specialist Publishers,’ outlines essential actions for transitioning to OA publishing while maintaining long-term sustainability. Accompanying the guide is a detailed report titled ‘Supporting Learned Society, Subject Association, and Smaller Specialist Publishers to Transition to Open Access Book Publishing.’ The report identifies key strategies for OA adoption and highlights areas requiring targeted support and investment.

Developed in collaboration with several stakeholders, including the Association of Learned Professional and Society Publishers, the British Academy, and the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association, the guide presents a shared vision for fostering a more inclusive and sustainable OA ecosystem. This vision is intended to help publishers make informed decisions and prioritize actions that align with the broader goals of open access.

The guide’s release marks an important step toward ensuring that small and specialist publishers can navigate the challenges of OA, offering the tools and guidance needed to thrive in this evolving landscape.
