ACS reaffirms commitment to advancing science amid changing federal landscape -

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, supporting a global community, and championing scientific integrity in a letter shared with its members. With the beginning of 2025 marked by swift changes in the federal landscape, ACS is focused on navigating these shifts and ensuring that chemistry remains a central pillar of research and development.

Each year, ACS develops a U.S. public policy agenda, which helps guide its work with Congress and the administration. This year, however, federal actions have emerged quickly, impacting areas such as research funding eligibility, scientific data reporting, and indirect costs for biomedical research grants. In response, ACS remains dedicated to driving improvements in science and society through the transformative power of chemistry.

The ACS's advocacy will focus on four key areas: strengthening inclusive STEM education and workforce development, enhancing innovation ecosystems, increasing investment in research and development, and ensuring scientific integrity and data accessibility.

As the policy landscape continues to evolve, ACS will proactively engage with legislators and other stakeholders to emphasize the vital role of chemistry and science at large. Members of the scientific community are encouraged to join ACS's legislative action network, Act4Chemistry, to help advocate for these important goals.

With 149 years of history, ACS is poised to navigate these changes, guided by its strategic plan that began in January. The organization stands ready to advance scientific progress and empower future generations of scientists.
