UK Publishing boosts the UK's international reputation, finds new research -

As The London Book Fair kicks off this week (11-13 March), new research from the Publishers Association highlights the significant role of UK books, journals, and educational resources in enhancing the UK's global reputation. The study underscores the impact of British literature and academic publishing on the country's soft power, which contributes to attracting tourists, students, and fostering global cultural and academic collaboration.

According to the research, UK publishing is a major success story, with 80% of international adults agreeing that British literature positively impacts the UK’s international standing. This figure surpasses other key cultural exports, such as music (73%), sports (72%), and business influence (57%).

Key findings from the study, conducted by Public First, include:

• 80% of international adults believe British academic research boosts the UK’s reputation.

• Nearly two-thirds (63%) agree that the UK’s international influence would be diminished without British literature.

• 82% of international adults place the UK among the top 5 countries globally for academic research.

• 68% of international students consider the global reputation of UK academic publications when choosing to study in the UK.

The research also highlights publishing's role in UK tourism. Literary tourism, both domestic and international, is forecast to grow from £1.7 billion in 2024 to £2.1 billion by 2030, a nearly 25% increase. More than half (54%) of international adults have been inspired to visit UK locations linked to famous British literature.

The survey, conducted with 2,009 UK adults and 680 international adults, demonstrates the critical role UK publishing plays in shaping the country’s global influence.
