STM has joined a coalition of European authors, performers, publishers, and other rightsholders in opposing the third draft of the EU AI Act’s GPAI Code of Practice, citing significant concerns over its alignment with existing copyright law.
The coalition argues that the current draft fails to uphold the AI Act’s objectives and weakens protections for copyrighted works. Instead of establishing a framework for lawful and transparent AI development, the Code diminishes rightsholders' ability to safeguard their content, undermining trust in research and innovation.
As the global trade association for academic and professional publishers, STM remains committed to fostering responsible AI regulation. Alongside its coalition partners, it urges the Chairs, Vice-Chairs, and the AI Office to make substantial revisions, emphasizing that no Code is preferable to one that fails to meet legal and ethical standards.
