Recent advancements in artificial intelligence—particularly generative AI—have significantly expanded the capabilities of machine tools in assisting with writing, editing, and enhancing research manuscripts through images and diagrams. However, publisher guidelines have not kept pace with these technological developments, creating uncertainty among authors, reviewers, and readers. To address this, the STM Association Task and Finish Group on AI Labelling Terminology for Research Content Declaration has developed a draft classification system for AI use in academic manuscript preparation. This framework aims to support publishers in establishing policies regarding how AI should be used and transparently declared by authors.
