Emerald Publishing has established a new open access agreement with the Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL), aimed at expanding publishing opportunities for researchers in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. The agreement eliminates caps on the number of articles eligible for open access publishing, allowing affiliated authors to publish in all hybrid and gold journals without restriction.
The initiative is designed to remove barriers to open access and streamline the publishing process for researchers, while reinforcing Emerald’s ongoing support for open research practices. By removing limits on publication volume and journal type, the agreement provides greater flexibility and ensures that a wider range of scholarly work can be disseminated without access constraints.
Emerald, which has historically focused on applied research in business and management, now supports a broad portfolio spanning diverse fields within the social sciences. The partnership with CAUL reflects a strategic effort to align with the growing demand for equitable, sustainable, and accessible publishing models that meet the needs of both authors and institutions.
The agreement is positioned as a contribution to CAUL’s evolving portfolio of open access arrangements, offering increased value by simplifying the publishing process and removing administrative complexity. Participating institutions benefit from the ability to publish without incurring additional charges or navigating journal-specific limitations, thereby enhancing the discoverability and impact of regional research. By supporting authors through this uncapped model, both organizations reaffirm their commitment to reducing barriers in scholarly communication and promoting a more inclusive open access ecosystem.
