BMJ Group expands global open access reach through new Read and Publish agreements -

BMJ Group, a global provider of healthcare knowledge, is expanding its open access portfolio with a series of new and renewed Read and Publish agreements for 2025. These agreements extend the Group’s support for international knowledge dissemination by enabling researchers to publish open access, increasing the visibility and reach of their work.

As of 2025, BMJ Group's Read and Publish arrangements now include more than 200 institutions worldwide. Publishing output under these agreements rose by 212% in 2024 compared to 2021, reflecting growing global momentum toward sustainable open access publishing models. Participating institutions gain access to the Group’s full journal collection, comprising over 65 titles, including leading publications in their respective fields.

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, BMJ Group has renewed its agreements with JISC and the Irish Research e-Library (IReL) for a fifth consecutive year. These arrangements continue to offer open access publishing across the entire BMJ Journals Collection to researchers at more than 75 institutions, supporting long-term efforts to transition to open access and expand the availability of healthcare research.

Across Europe, BMJ Group has extended its partnerships with national consortia in Hungary and Austria. The agreements with Hungary’s Electronic Information Services National Programme (EiSZ) and Austria’s E-Media Austria Cooperation (KEMO) provide affiliated researchers with publishing rights across the full journal suite. Additional renewals include arrangements with the Bayern Konsortium (Germany), the National Library of Sweden (Bibsam), and the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries (CSAL).

In Australia, the Group’s institutional presence has grown from one agreement in 2024 to four in 2025. New partners include the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, University of Notre Dame, University of New South Wales, and Edith Cowan University. These agreements are intended to broaden open access publishing opportunities in the region and strengthen local research collaboration.

In the United States, BMJ Group has entered new Read and Publish agreements with the University of Arizona and Northeastern University, while Vanderbilt University, Rowan University, and Michigan State University have renewed existing arrangements. These agreements cover both BMJ Journals Collection and the Group’s Gold open access titles, including The BMJ [Research] and BMJ Open.

In Mexico, the Group maintains its partnership with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) through a new 2025 Read and Publish agreement. This arrangement includes both read and publish access across BMJ’s journal portfolio and its Gold open access offerings.

These developments are part of BMJ Group’s broader commitment to expanding open access and enhancing the global impact of academic healthcare research.
