Science Europe has selected the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University and the Know Center in Graz to conduct a study examining the relationship between open science practices and evolving research cultures. The collaboration follows a public call for tender issued in November 2024.
The initiative is jointly led by Science Europe’s Working Groups on Open Science and Research Culture, which aim to support strategic dialogue and knowledge exchange among member organisations. The study builds on findings from a 2024 internal survey presented during International Open Access Week and is intended to inform the development of policy recommendations and frameworks for research assessment and cultural change.
Throughout 2025, Science Europe will host a series of internal workshops for members to examine the survey results in depth. These sessions will address topics such as open access to research outputs, broader aspects of the research process, policy directions, and structural drivers of research culture reform.
The commissioned study includes a scoping review of academic literature related to the themes identified in Science Europe’s 2024 survey. This review will assess how open science practices have been implemented and monitored, and how they interact with the values, behaviours, and institutional norms that shape research cultures.
Preliminary findings will be shared during a closed workshop for member organisations on 25 June 2025. A public webinar is planned for October 2025 to present the final outcomes and outline further steps in this area of focus.
