EIFL, in collaboration with African Journals Online (AJOL) and the West and Central African Research and Education Network (WACREN), has opened a call for proposals aimed at enhancing the quality and sustainability of Diamond open access (OA) publishing in Africa. The initiative targets African legal entities that publish Diamond OA journals—journals that do not charge fees to either authors or readers—and where editorial operations are based.
This marks the second of two planned calls under a three-year project funded by Wellcome and launched in November 2023. The initiative seeks to support a diverse and resilient Diamond OA publishing ecosystem on the continent. Outcomes from the initial round of funding, awarded last year, include 17 supported projects.
Applications may be submitted by African organizations that meet the following conditions:
• Must be a legally registered institution in Africa (e.g. universities, research institutes, scholarly societies, or public non-profit organizations)
• Must own and/or manage Diamond OA journals with editorial teams based in Africa, or operate platforms that host such journals
• Each organization may submit a maximum of one proposal
Support may be requested for one or more Diamond OA journals or for platforms that host multiple journals. Funding limits per proposal:
• Up to USD 20,000 for applications involving a single journal
• Up to USD 30,000 for proposals covering multiple journals or journal hosting platforms
Projects are expected to begin in September 2025 and must be completed within 12 months. The deadline for submission is 6 June 2025 at 23:59 UTC.
