The University of North Dakota (UND) is facilitating broader access to scholarly research by entering into read and publish agreements with several academic publishers. These agreements allow UND-affiliated authors to publish open access articles without incurring individual article processing charges (APCs), as the associated costs are covered centrally by the institution.
Read and publish agreements are structured to combine subscription access with support for open access publishing. Institutions pay a consolidated fee that includes both access to subscription-based content and the ability for affiliated authors to publish open access. While terms vary by publisher, this model aims to increase the public availability of research while maintaining access to traditional academic content.
Through the Chester Fritz Library, UND has established read and publish agreements with multiple leading publishers. These agreements support UND researchers in publishing across a range of journals without direct APC payments, with eligibility subject to the specific conditions of each agreement.
Key advantages for participating researchers include:
• Cost coverage for open access publishing
• Increased discoverability of research outputs
• Support for compliance with funder open access mandates
Researchers are advised to:
• Use SciFree to verify journal eligibility
• Confirm UND affiliation during manuscript submission
• Contact the Chester Fritz Library for assistance with the publication process
Additional resources at UND include the UND Scholarly Commons, an institutional repository for archiving research; an Open Access Publication Grant to support APCs not covered by current agreements; and guidance on Creative Commons licensing for managing rights and reuse.
