AMA appoints Dr. John Whyte as next CEO and executive vice president -

The American Medical Association has announced the appointment of John J. Whyte, M.D., M.P.H., as its next chief executive officer and executive vice president. Dr. Whyte will formally assume leadership of the organization on July 1, 2025.

With a career spanning clinical medicine, federal health policy, and the private sector, Dr. Whyte brings extensive experience to the role. He has practiced as a physician for 27 years and has held leadership roles across multiple government agencies, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In the private sector, he held executive positions at Discovery Communications and most recently served as chief medical officer at WebMD.

Dr. Whyte is board-certified in internal medicine. He received his medical degree from Hahnemann University School of Medicine, completed residency training at Duke University Medical Center, and earned a Master of Public Health in health policy and management from Harvard University.

In addition to his professional roles, Dr. Whyte has authored extensively for both professional and general audiences, including five best-selling books. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was recognized for his public health communication and was named among the Top 20 Health Influencers.
