OASPA launches ‘Next 50%’ initiative to advance the future of open access -

The Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA) has launched the ‘Next 50%’ initiative, introducing a foundational primer to prompt renewed dialogue on the future direction of open access publishing. This effort arises at a time when growth in open access outputs appears to be decelerating, prompting the need for a collective reassessment of what open access should achieve and how it might evolve.

The project aims to mobilize a wide range of perspectives to define a more inclusive and effective open access landscape. Stakeholders are encouraged to respond to an open survey, which will remain available until 11 July 2025. The survey seeks input on the themes presented in the primer and offers an opportunity for broad engagement from across the scholarly communication ecosystem.

As part of the initiative, three online workshops will be convened in June 2025, facilitated by project partner Research Consulting. These sessions are designed to bring together OASPA’s publishing members alongside funders and other key actors in scholarly publishing. While participation in the workshops is limited due to capacity, the survey ensures that all interested parties—whether individuals or organizations—can contribute substantively to the initiative.
