Emerald Publishing reports success of three-year open access agreement with SANLiC Consortium -

Emerald Publishing has reported strong outcomes from its three-year open access agreement with the South African National Library and Information Consortium (SANLiC). Established in 2022, the agreement aimed to enable researchers at participating institutions in South Africa to publish their work fully open access.

The Read and Publish model implemented under the agreement has yielded significant results, with all available Article Processing Charge (APC) vouchers fully utilized during the first year. This arrangement has facilitated unrestricted reading access to Emerald’s complete content collection for SANLiC member libraries and supported publication in both hybrid and fully open access journals.

The partnership currently serves 27 organizations across South Africa and supports over 900 registered users. Initially established as part of the first phase of publisher agreements, it remains active until the end of 2024. This initiative aligns with Emerald’s objective to reduce barriers to participation and expand access to research and education resources in the region.

Emerald has also announced a renewal of its collaboration with SANLiC, extending the transformative agreement for an additional three years through 2027. This renewed commitment aims to continue fostering open access publishing, supporting the advancement of research and learning across member institutions in South Africa.
