Charuhas V. Thakar named Editor-in-Chief of Kidney360 -

The American Society of Nephrology (ASN), a professional organization focused on advancing kidney health, has appointed Professor Charuhas V. Thakar as the next editor-in-chief of Kidney360, its monthly open-access, online-only journal. Thakar currently serves as director of the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute of Experimental Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast and will begin his six-year term on January 1, 2026. He becomes the second editor-in-chief of Kidney360 since its launch in 2020 and the first editor-in-chief of an ASN journal to be based outside the United States.

Kidney360 receives nearly 1,000 original research submissions annually across clinical and scientific domains. In his new role, Thakar will lead a multidisciplinary editorial team responsible for evaluating research across nephrology subfields. The journal includes recurring features such as “Global Perspectives,” which highlights regional variations in kidney care, and “Debates in Nephrology,” which addresses emerging and contested issues in the discipline.

Thakar brings prior editorial leadership experience, having served as editor-in-chief of Advances in Kidney Disease and Health, a journal of the National Kidney Foundation, since 2020. His academic background includes roles as division director of nephrology at the University of Cincinnati and chief of the renal section at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center. He has also contributed as an associate editor, guest editor, and author for several nephrology journals and textbooks.

In outlining his editorial direction, Thakar emphasized plans to broaden the journal’s reach by encouraging submissions of peer-reviewed and invited content across diverse areas of nephrology. The objective, he noted, is to attract high-quality research from a global contributor base to inform practice and policy and to support improvements in kidney health outcomes. He also noted the opportunity to lead a collaborative editorial team and to work in alignment with the editorial leadership of ASN’s other journals.

Thakar’s appointment marks a structural shift in ASN’s editorial leadership, expanding the geographical scope of its journal management. Kidney360 was launched in 2020 and publishes research contributions spanning both clinical and basic science. The journal receives nearly 1,000 original research submissions annually and features content such as “Global Perspectives” and “Debates in Nephrology,” aimed at examining international variations in kidney care and emerging issues in the field. ASN publications collectively address topics relevant to populations affected by kidney disease globally, including in the United States.
