DIAMAS outputs positioned to reshape Diamond open access across Europe -

The DIAMAS project concluded with a final conference in Brussels on June 3, 2025, where nine core outputs were formally integrated into the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH). These outputs are designed to support the implementation, scalability, and long-term sustainability of the Diamond open access (OA) model across Europe and internationally.

The event featured panel discussions that explored how DIAMAS resources could be used in various national and institutional contexts. One session focused on the Diamond Open Access Standard (DOAS), sustainability resources, and the recommendations and guidelines for institutions, funders, sponsors, donors and policymakers. A case from Switzerland highlighted how the sustainability resources align with national efforts to develop policy guidelines for institutional investment in Diamond OA. Participants from other European countries contributed additional perspectives on applying these tools within different policy and funding landscapes.

Subsequent panels addressed diversity and collaboration in Diamond OA publishing. Speakers emphasized that bibliodiversity and sustainability can be strengthened through coordinated infrastructure sharing and interoperability among publishers. While collaborative practices were highlighted as essential to long-term resilience, participants noted that competition for limited financial resources remains a challenge, particularly in regions with constrained OA funding. Discussions also examined whether institutional support should focus on national or transnational initiatives. There was broad agreement on the importance of cross-border alignment and continued engagement with local scholarly communities.

The concluding session examined forward-looking strategies, with separate panels for policymakers and practitioners. Policymakers expressed support for the strategic directions defined by DIAMAS, citing the significance of the EDCH, multinational funding collaborations, and researcher-led initiatives. Practitioners welcomed both the EDCH and the training materials developed by DIAMAS, which will be further advanced through the ALMASI project. Participants emphasized the need for sustained collaboration, equity, and inclusivity to ensure the viability of Diamond OA at a global scale.

As DIAMAS reaches completion in August 2025, its outcomes will be carried forward through the ALMASI project, which aims to extend Diamond OA infrastructures across three continents. SPARC Europe affirmed its continued engagement in policy advocacy and capacity-building to support the development and sustainability of Diamond OA both within Europe and beyond.
