IOP Publishing and BIPM transition Metrologia to full open access in 2026 -

IOP Publishing and the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) have announced that Metrologia, a leading journal in pure and applied metrology, will fully transition to an open access publishing model starting January 1, 2026.

The move supports the global shift toward open science and meets evolving funder mandates requiring free public access to research outputs. Under the new model, all articles published from 2026 onward will be openly accessible, increasing their reach and impact.

Since 2003, IOPP and BIPM have co-published Metrologia. IOPP has previously supported similar transitions for organizations such as the American Astronomical Society, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the Japan Society of Applied Physics.

Any submissions received after August 18, 2025, will be processed as open access articles to facilitate the change. The journal will be part of IOPP’s transformative agreements, allowing authors from participating institutions to publish without incurring direct Article Processing Charges (APCs).
