Mario R. Ortiz named Editor-in-Chief of Nursing Science Quarterly -

Mario R. Ortiz, dean of the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Binghamton University, has been appointed editor-in-chief of Nursing Science Quarterly (NSQ), a peer-reviewed journal focusing on nursing theory development, theory-based practice, and related research. Published since 1988, NSQ regularly features contributions from leading theorists, researchers, and nurse executives.

Ortiz has contributed to NSQ for more than 15 years and serves on editorial panels for Nursing Outlook, the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, and the Journal of Rural Nursing and Health Care. He became dean of Decker College in 2016, is executive director of the Kresge Center for Nursing Research and the Community Health Centers of Practice, and holds the Decker Endowed Chair in Community Health Nursing.

In addition to his academic leadership, Ortiz practices as an advanced nurse at REACH Medical in New York, focusing on primary care, opioid use disorder treatment, HIV prevention and treatment, and Hepatitis C testing and treatment. He also serves as the only nurse on the New York State Department of Health’s Public Health and Planning Council and chairs the NYS Health Equity Council.

Ortiz is a Fellow in the Nursing Academy of the National Academies of Practice, the American Academy of Nursing, and the Royal Society for Public Health. He teaches graduate courses in nursing theory, philosophy, conceptual analysis, and qualitative research.
