KU Libraries opens nominations for 2025 Shulenburger Award -

The University of Kansas Libraries is now accepting nominations for the 2025 David Shulenburger Award for Innovation and Advocacy in Scholarly Communication. Submissions are due by September 19.

The annual award, established in 2014, recognizes KU faculty, staff, students, or departments that advance open access and innovation in scholarly communication. Up to two recipients may be selected, with awards ranging from $500 to $2,500. Individual awardees may also be invited to join KU’s Open Access Advisory Board.

Past recipients have been recognized for work that expands affordability and accessibility of scholarly resources. In 2024, Raj Bhala, distinguished professor of Law, received the award for publishing an openly accessible, expanded edition of his international trade law textbook through KU ScholarWorks.

Winners of the 2025 award will be announced during International Open Access Week in October. KU Libraries will also host a keynote by Michael Dougherty, chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland, on October 21. His talk will focus on aligning faculty evaluation practices with open science principles to promote scholarship for the public good.

Additional details on the award and nomination process are available from KU Libraries’ Shulenburger Office of Scholarly Communication.
