The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has implemented a revised public access policy, effective for all NIH-funded articles accepted for publication after July 1, 2025.
Given NIH’s role as a major funder of research at the University of California, the changes are expected to affect many UC-affiliated authors. To support compliance, the Office of Scholarly Communication (OSC) has published guidance outlining the new requirements and the ways UC’s open access publishing agreements can assist researchers. Visitors can refer to OSC’s Guidance on the Revised NIH Public Access Policy page for details on how to comply with the requirements.
The guidance provides an overview of compliance obligations for NIH-funded authors, information on publication costs, and clarification of how the policy applies across different publishing circumstances.
Further details, including the policy text and FAQs, are available on NIH’s Public Access pages.
