EIFL agreements drive sharp increase in open access publishing -

EIFL’s Licensing Programme with publishers continues to expand open access publishing opportunities in its partner countries, according to new data from 2024.

By the end of the year, EIFL had secured 14 open access agreements with publishers, covering waived or discounted article processing charges (APCs) and read-and-publish terms. These allowed corresponding authors in EIFL countries to publish in 2,548 hybrid or fully open-access journals under preferential conditions.

The impact was reflected in a 69% rise in open access output compared to 2023. Authors from 35 partner countries published 2,958 open-access articles in 2024, with the vast majority (92.9%) appearing in fully open-access journals. The agreements saved authors an estimated 4.1 million USD in APCs, up 60% from the previous year.

Most publications were with larger publishers such as Taylor & Francis, Sage, and Oxford University Press, though output across other partners is steadily increasing. In total, 2,430 authors published in 430 journals during the year, with titles like Cogent Food & Agriculture and Cogent Social Sciences among the most common outlets.

Two new agreements, with the Microbiology Society and De Gruyter, took effect in January 2025, raising the total to 15 agreements and extending eligibility to nearly 3,000 journals.

EIFL also supports authors through searchable lists of eligible journals and publisher webinars, helping streamline the open-access publishing process.
