MDPI has been added to the COUNTER Registry and will provide standardized usage reporting across its portfolio of more than 475 fully open access journals. The publisher announced the move supports institutions and consortia in assessing research impact, reviewing publishing agreements, and making funding decisions.
The COUNTER Code of Practice Release 5.1 (R5.1) provides international standards for consistent and comparable reporting of online scholarly resources. Optimized for open access, the release includes Global Item Reports that track usage across journal articles, highlighting the reach of research outputs when subscription barriers are removed.
MDPI will issue Platform, Title, and Item Reports, with Institute and Consortia-level Standard Views available for institutions with validated IP ranges. Reports will include usage data from January 2024 and will be released four weeks after each monthly reporting period. Registered institutions can request data via MDPI’s SuSy system or harvest reports automatically using the COUNTER API.
COUNTER noted that its normalized metrics are used worldwide by libraries to evaluate return on investment. MDPI stated adoption of the standard reflects its long-term focus on openness, transparency, and measuring the global impact of open access publishing.
