SPIE has announced that Simon Thibault, professor at Université Laval, will assume the role of series Editor for the SPIE Field Guides beginning in January 2026. He will succeed J. Scott Tyo, who has served in the position since 2020.
Thibault directs Université Laval’s Department of Physics, Engineering Physics, and Optics and leads the Optical Engineering Research Lab. He also heads the Advanced Optical Fabrication Infrastructure program and holds the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Optical Design. His research covers areas including optical design, AI in lens design, optical metrology, adaptive optics, and optics in extreme environments.
Over his career, Thibault has designed more than 200 optical systems, from space-based telescopes to miniature miniature cell phone camera modules and medical endoscopes. He has authored or co-authored over 30 patents and more than300 conference presentations and journal articles. An SPIE Fellow since 2018, he has played an active role in SPIE conferences and has served as Associate Editor of Optical Engineering.
SPIE highlighted Thibault’s technical expertise and forward-looking perspective, noting that his leadership will help ensure the Field Guides remain a trusted reference for engineers and scientists in optics and photonics.
