Witten/Herdecke University joins JMIR–ZB Med flat-fee OA publishing agreement -

JMIR Publications and ZB Med have announced that Witten/Herdecke University has joined their Flat-Fee Unlimited Open Access Publishing Agreement. The addition was facilitated by Ulrike Weichern of KGL Accucoms.

Witten/Herdecke is the third German institution to join the JMIR–ZB Med agreement in 2025. The release states that JMIR’s institutional partnerships have reduced or removed financial barriers to open-access publishing at multiple institutions. JMIR describes itself as an independent open-access publisher aiming to broaden reach without author-paid Article Processing Charges (APCs) under such agreements.

JMIR’s Vice President of Communications and Partnerships, Dennis O’Brien, stated that the new member confirms the value of the flat-fee model and provides momentum for the fall enrollment period.

The agreement is presented as part of ZB Med’s support for life-sciences researchers under open-science principles. For researchers at participating institutions, the arrangement removes APCs and simplifies publishing across JMIR’s portfolio of more than 30 Gold Open Access journals.

The partnership took effect on July 1, 2025, and runs through December 31, 2026, covering publishing in all JMIR Publications journals during that period.
