21C Lab, CATL’s innovation arm focused on next-generation battery technologies, and Springer Nature have announced the launch of Watt, an international journal on energy and carbon-neutrality research.
The first issue is scheduled for February 2026. The journal’s aim is to support the energy transition by publishing research that emphasizes scalability, reproducibility, and applicability.
Watt will cover research relevant to the net-zero transition, including energy storage, conversion technologies, grid optimization, carbon capture, and policy analysis. The journal is positioned to connect academic and industrial communities by emphasizing rigorous work with practical use cases and pathways to deployment.
The journal states it is guided by an editorial board of scientists in energy research and publishing to uphold academic standards.
Watt’s editorial approach is described as the “Five Highs” framework:
● High Quality: Peer review combines in-house editorial assessment with insights from external researchers.
● High Reproducibility: Key experiments undergo independent checks to support reliable findings for users of the research.
● High Practicality: Studies with implementation potential may receive incubation support to move from research to application.
● High Visibility: An open-access model and outreach to policy, industry, and academic audiences are intended to broaden reach.
● High Diversity: Submissions from varied disciplines, regions, and perspectives are encouraged.
The journal is open for submissions and invites contributions of original research, participation as reviewers, and sharing of the journal within professional networks. Watt states that it intends to function as a link between research and deployable technology, providing a venue for collaboration and information exchange related to the energy transition.
