The University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries have launched The Open Journal for Students’ and New Scientists’ Research (OJSSR), a peer-reviewed, open-access publication designed to support undergraduate and early-career researchers.
The new journal encourages students and novice scientists to engage in original, data-driven research across biological and life sciences, public health, and education. It welcomes a range of submissions, including original research articles, short studies and lab-based projects, scientific literature reviews, and class-based or summer program individual research reports.
The editorial board includes Founding Editor Jedaidah Chilufya-Scalessa, along with Executive Editors Dong Wang and Favorite Iradukunda. The journal’s website was developed by Nora Zahn, a Simmons University MLS student who collaborated with UMass Libraries during her internship.
OJSSR aims to provide emerging researchers with hands-on experience in peer review and scholarly publishing, helping them bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional research. Author guidelines and submission details are available on the journal’s website.
The initiative reflects UMass Amherst’s continued support for open-access publishing and its commitment to fostering research engagement among students and new scientists.
