NISO forms working group to develop recommended practice for open ILS/LSP interoperability -

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has approved the creation of a working group to develop a Recommended Practice aimed at improving open interoperability around Integrated Library Systems (ILS) and Library Services Platforms (LSP). The initiative seeks to establish greater clarity, conformity, and visibility across systems to better serve libraries and their technology partners.

Libraries use diverse software combinations to meet their institutional goals, but integration across systems is often limited by inconsistent standards. Since the ILS or LSP acts as the operational core of most libraries, interoperability is essential to maximizing the functionality of surrounding tools and services.

The new Open ILS Working Group will analyze the existing interoperability landscape and conduct community surveys to identify areas for improvement. Its objective is to define practices that enhance system interaction, increase transparency around tools, applications, and processes, and empower libraries to customize their technology environments according to mission needs.

The group will be co-chaired by Russell Palmer of GALILEO Support Services and Scott Bernier of EBSCO Information Services, alongside Erik Radio of the University of Colorado Boulder. NISO encourages community members with technical or vendor expertise to participate in the development of this collaborative framework.
