PLOS Global Public Health has announced the appointment of Professor Manuela De Allegri as the journal’s new co-Editor-in-Chief, joining founding Editor-in-Chief Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi. Professor De Allegri brings extensive experience in health systems research, equity-focused inquiry, and capacity strengthening across global contexts.
Professor De Allegri is based at the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health (HIGH) at Heidelberg University, where she leads research and mentorship programs centered on health system performance, accessibility, and fairness. Her work spans health financing reforms, maternal and reproductive health, and the evaluation of large-scale health interventions using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Her research emphasizes methodological integration, contextual understanding, and collaboration with partners across Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.
In her new role, Professor De Allegri will help advance the journal’s commitment to equitable and inclusive global health publishing. Priorities include strengthening regional representation across the editorial ecosystem, supporting diverse research methodologies that reflect real-world health challenges, and expanding open and transparent science practices. She has long advocated for equitable authorship, sustainable research partnerships, and mentorship models that build leadership in underrepresented regions.
PLOS Global Public Health continues to serve as a platform for evidence and insight on urgent global health issues, including pandemics, planetary health, reproductive justice, and the social determinants of health. Professor De Allegri’s appointment strengthens the journal’s goal of amplifying diverse perspectives and reimagining global health scholarship rooted in transparency, inclusion, and collaboration.
