Gates Foundation grant supports Mapping U.S. Diamond Open Access Journals project -

A new Gates Foundation grant of $206,886 awarded to Lyrasis, in collaboration with the Big Ten Academic Alliance’s Center for Library Programs and the California Digital Library, will support the Mapping U.S. Diamond Open Access Journals project. The initiative is designed to advance community-governed scholarly publishing in the United States.

The project builds on ongoing commitments among the collaborating organizations to strengthen Diamond Open Access, a model in which journals are peer reviewed and free for authors and readers, operating on a fully non-commercial basis. Leadership from the participating groups noted that the grant will deepen work aligned with the broader international effort to develop sustainable, academy-owned solutions for scholarly publishing.

Project leads indicated that the study is expected to reinforce the national community of Diamond OA publishers and create stronger alignment with the global Diamond OA publishing landscape, addressing persistent challenges in scholarly communications. By removing commercial barriers, the initiative aims to expand research reach and impact while broadening the range of voices represented in scholarly literature.

The project will run through February 2027.
