Murali Haran, professor of statistics in the Eberly College of Science at Penn State, has been named Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Agricultural, Biological and Environmental Statistics (JABES) for a three-year term beginning in 2026. The journal is jointly published by the American Statistical Association and the International Biometric Society.
JABES focuses on introducing new statistical methods to address challenges in the agricultural, biological, and environmental sciences. The journal serves an international community of authors and readers, with previous editors-in-chief representing five continents.
Haran’s research is motivated by applications in environmental science and disease modeling. His work includes studies on the Antarctic Ice Sheet and the transmission of infectious diseases, conducted in collaboration with researchers from Penn State’s Department of Geosciences and the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics. His research also spans fast computational algorithms for statistical problems and methods for analyzing spatial data.
Haran has published in both scientific and statistical methodology journals, and his contributions have been recognized with the 2015 El-Shaarawi Young Researchers Award from the International Environmetrics Society. He joined the Penn State faculty in 2004 and served as head of the Department of Statistics from 2018 to 2024.
