SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, has become a signatory to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Publishers Compact alongside other organizations in the publishing community.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) consist of 17 goals addressing sustainability issues that affect people and the planet, and the SDGs Publishers Compact was created to encourage publishers worldwide to take action in support of those goals.
The compact represents a voluntary commitment recognizing the responsibility of the publishing industry to contribute to a sustainable future.
Several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are reflected in SPIE’s mission and in the research disseminated through its publishing platform, the SPIE Digital Library.
Activities aligned with these goals include developing partnerships with researchers, educators, and industry; publishing contracted conference proceedings for external organizations; and collaborating with universities and research institutions through SPIE Digital Library subscriptions and Read and Publish agreements.
SPIE also supports resilient publishing infrastructure and inclusive, innovative, and sustainable practices across optics and photonics through its academic and technical journals, books, and conference proceedings.
These publications include Journal of Micro/Nanopatterning, Materials, and Metrology; Journal of Optical Microsystems; Optical Engineering; Journal of Applied Remote Sensing; Journal of Medical Imaging; Neurophotonics; Journal of Biomedical Optics; Biophotonics Discovery; and Journal of Photonics for Energy, which disseminate research related to microelectronics, telecommunications, environmental monitoring and urban planning, healthcare, and energy.
SPIE further supports inclusive and equitable education and lifelong learning through its role as a not-for-profit educational society, including discounted journal publication fees, student paper awards, conference support for student authors, and professional development and training resources.
