The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has published its first sustainability strategy, outlining its vision of a sustainable future and its role in contributing toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
The organization states that the strategy was developed using insights drawn from within and beyond the global chemistry community.
According to the RSC, the strategy reflects increasing momentum around sustainability at both local and global levels, as well as the level of engagement observed across the chemistry community.
The strategy describes how the RSC contributes to sustainability across its programs and products, including sustainable laboratory practices, methods for quantifying environmental impact, optimization of existing technologies, and the design of future technologies to be safe and sustainable.
The document frames sustainability as encompassing people, planet, and profit, and identifies the strategy as a step toward formalizing this understanding. It also sets out the organization’s interpretation of the role of chemistry in sustainability and its plans to drive progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
