AIP Publishing and the Max Planck Society have announced a three-year AIP Fusion agreement designed to expand open access publishing through an institution-level model.
Negotiated by the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) on behalf of the Society, the agreement provides researchers affiliated with Max Planck Institutes with read access to AIP Publishing’s full portfolio of journals. It also enables affiliated authors to publish open access in all AIP Publishing and publishing partner titles, including gold open access journals, without individual article processing charges (APC).
AIP Fusion integrates publishing and reading into a single institutional agreement, shifting away from per-article transactions. The model is intended to reduce administrative complexity, support equitable participation in open research, maintain predictable costs, and preserve editorial independence.
The Max Planck Society described the agreement as a strategic investment in open access that supports researchers while advancing a more open scholarly communication landscape. Early adoption of the AIP Fusion model was presented as part of broader efforts to enable systemic change in scholarly communication.
According to AIP Publishing, the consultation with libraries and consortia during development of the model ensured alignment with library priorities. The agreement builds on an established relationship between AIP Publishing and MPDL and supports the Society’s mission to enable access to scientific information.
