HARRASSOWITZ partners with Purchase to Open to expand open access for academic books -

HARRASSOWITZ has partnered with the Purchase to Open (P2O) initiative to support the transition of academic monographs to open access through collaborative funding models involving libraries, publishers, and booksellers.

P2O operates as a community-based model that integrates established acquisition workflows with a pledging mechanism, enabling libraries to collectively fund the open access publication of scholarly books. Publishers submit forthcoming titles with defined funding targets, and libraries can pledge support through their preferred bookseller. When the funding threshold is reached, the title is made openly accessible. If the target is not achieved, participating institutions retain perpetual access to the e-book through a standard campus license.

P2O titles have been integrated into Fokus, HARRASSOWITZ’s system for managing and acquiring scholarly resources. Libraries can place pledges directly within existing selection and ordering workflows using current templates. Titles that align with institutional subject profiles are also distributed through New Title Announcements, linking back to corresponding records in Fokus.

The partnership extends HARRASSOWITZ’s ongoing efforts to support open access models and provide tools that enable libraries to manage and fund open access content within established acquisition systems.
