Oxford Journals Executive Summit 2026 explores future of scholarly publishing -

The Oxford Journals Executive Summit took place in April 2026 at the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford. The event brought together senior leaders from scholarly partner societies and Oxford University Press (OUP) journals colleagues for strategic discussions on the future of journal publishing. The Summit served as a forum to explore shared challenges, strengthen partnerships, and support sustainable decision making in an increasingly complex research environment.

Previously organized as Oxford Journals Day in regional locations, the Summit has evolved into a global event designed to align OUP’s journal strategy with the needs of society partners. By convening the community in one location, the event reinforced collaboration within the scholarly publishing sector.

This year’s program included more than 125 society leaders, who engaged in open dialogue about their shared responsibility to steward scholarly content. Discussions emphasized transparency and collective approaches to mission‑driven publishing.

A central aim of the Summit was to move beyond operational updates and create space for forward‑looking discussion. Sessions addressed the challenges societies face in balancing mission, quality, and sustainability amid shifting research behaviors, financial pressures, and technological change, particularly the rapid adoption of AI. Participants examined topics such as data‑driven journal growth, portfolio stewardship, and evolving editorial and publishing models. Peer‑to‑peer exchange across disciplines allowed society leaders to share experiences while engaging directly with OUP colleagues on shared priorities.

Delegates indicated that the sessions provided new insights and highlighted OUP’s approach to addressing pressing issues in scholarly publishing.

Another key theme was the need for collaboration in adapting to change. Sessions explored the impact of emerging technologies, including AI, on editorial processes and researcher expectations, alongside commitments to research integrity, trust, and transparency. Discussions underscored that long‑term success requires strong relationships, shared understanding, and careful assessment of trade‑offs.

Feedback from the Summit continues to inform OUP’s engagement with society partners and the design of future events. By reinforcing shared goals and encouraging thoughtful dialogue, the Executive Summit plays a role in supporting the sustainability and evolution of society journals within the broader mission of scholarly publishing.
