IntechOpen has announced the publication of its 8,000th open access book, marking a milestone in 2026 that follows the 20th anniversary of its first open access title.
The 8,000th book, Technology, Cultural Heritage and Scientific Diplomacy, is a specialized monograph published in the IntechOpen Compact format. It is among the first works to explore the application of technology to cultural heritage as a tool of scientific diplomacy.
Edited by Dr. Sabrina Greco and Dr. Maurizio Lazzari of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR‑ISPC), along with Fr. Jorge Carlos Naranjo Alcaide of Comboni College of Science and Technology in Khartoum, the book reflects collaboration between the two institutions. The SudanInnovation project featured in the volume is part of a broader program funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The project applied digital technologies such as 3D modeling and photogrammetry to document and interpret cultural heritage. It demonstrates how digital tools can support preservation efforts in complex and rapidly changing environments.
Beyond documenting international collaboration, the book serves as a reference for similar initiatives worldwide. It outlines how technology, capacity building, and knowledge exchange can contribute to cultural heritage preservation and the development of local expertise.
