EDP Sciences and the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI) have confirmed that Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena and ESAIM: Probability and Statistics will remain fully open access in 2026 under the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model.
Both journals achieved the required level of institutional support to secure open access for the coming year. Their continuation demonstrates that the S2O model can succeed when there is sufficient and timely commitment from the academic community.
For the remaining four mathematics journals in the portfolio, subscription targets have not yet been met, and their open access status for 2026 is still under review. EDP Sciences indicated that renewal levels will continue to be assessed in the coming weeks in consultation with institutional partners. Without adequate support, these journals may revert to gated access.
The S2O model provides a pathway to open access that avoids article processing charges, supports equity in publishing, and maintains the connection between journals and subscribing institutions. It requires ongoing and timely commitment from libraries and consortia to remain viable.
EDP Sciences reaffirmed its commitment to making mathematics research openly available wherever possible, with the objective of ensuring immediate and unrestricted access to high‑quality content while maintaining financial sustainability and fairness for the community.

The six mathematics journals participating in the S2O program for 2026 are: ESAIM: Control, Optimization and Calculus of Variations; ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis; ESAIM: Probability and Statistics; Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena; RAIRO – Operations Research; and RAIRO – Theoretical Informatics and Applications.
