CARL announces grants for Open Access Book Publishing -

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) has announced the recipients of the inaugural Fund for Advancing Open Access Book Publishing.

Launched in 2026 as a two‑year pilot program, the initiative was designed to accelerate the publication of scholarly books in open access by Canadian university presses. The program is funded through contributions from participating CARL member libraries and was developed by the CARL Advancing Research Committee in collaboration with the Association of Canadian University Presses (ACUP).

Thirteen titles have been awarded grants of $4,000 each to help offset publishing costs. The funded works represent a range of scholarship in Canada, with ten titles to be published in English and three in French.

The following ACUP member presses will receive support through the inaugural funding round:

• Athabasca University Press

• Concordia University Press

• McGill‑Queen’s University Press

• Presses de l’Université de Montréal

• Presses de l’Université Laval

• University of Alberta Press

• University of Calgary Press

Through this initiative, participating presses will make funded books openly available upon publication, supporting greater accessibility and discoverability of Canadian scholarly work worldwide.

CARL expressed appreciation to the participating member libraries, the Advancing Research Committee, and ACUP leadership for their collaboration in launching the program.
