Frontiers has received both a gold and a silver award at the 2026 Excellence in Publishing, Information Technology & Communications (EPIC) Awards, presented by the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) during its 48th Annual Meeting in Chula Vista, California on May 28, 2026. The recognition highlights the publisher’s pioneering work in responsible AI adoption and its innovative approach to research integrity.
A Roadmap for Responsible AI use in research and Publishing
The gold award in the Reports category was awarded to Frontiers’ whitepaper 'Unlocking AI’s Untapped Potential: Responsible Innovation in Research and Publishing,' published in December 2025. The study, based on a global survey of 1,645 researchers, revealed that more than half of peer reviewers already use AI tools, with adoption reaching 87% among early-career researchers. The whitepaper translates these findings into evidence-based policy recommendations for publishers, institutions, funders, and tool developers, offering a practical roadmap to strengthen rigor, reproducibility, and trust in scientific publishing.
Guardians of Science: Making research Integrity Visible
The silver award in the Narrative / Multidisciplinary Digital Projects category recognized Frontiers’ campaign Guardians of Science: Unveiling the Human Force Behind Research Integrity. Developed by the Brand team, the campaign combined video, editorial storytelling, and social-first distribution to spotlight the expertise of Frontiers’ Research Integrity team and the advanced technology supporting their work. A podcast-style interview with the AI Review Assistant (AIRA) and a “Day in the Life” series brought transparency to quality control processes, reframing conversations about trust, oversight, and the role of AI in publishing.
Commitment to Open and Trusted Science
Now in its second year, the EPIC Awards drew more than 98 entries in 2026. Frontiers’ dual recognition underscores its leadership in setting a roadmap for responsible AI use and in upholding research integrity. Together, these achievements reinforce the publisher’s commitment to making science open, transparent, and trusted.
