MDPI and Swiss Consortium renew Institutional Open Access partnership -

The Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries (CSAL) has renewed its publishing agreement with MDPI, extending access to the publisher’s Institutional Open Access Program (IOAP) for 24 institutions across Switzerland. The year‑long partnership provides researchers with a 20% discount on article processing charges (APCs), supporting broader participation in open access publishing.

Alistair Freeland, Chief Operating Officer at MDPI, noted that the collaboration reflects strong support for open access within Switzerland’s academic community. He emphasized that, as a Swiss‑founded publisher, MDPI values the opportunity to help researchers share their work globally while ensuring Swiss research remains visible in the international open access landscape.

The renewal coincides with the release of MDPI’s 2025 Country Report for Switzerland, which highlights sustained demand for open access publishing. The report indicates that Switzerland has consistently ranked among the leading countries for open access publication rates, with 65–70% of research outputs published openly between 2021 and 2025.

Key Findings from MDPI’s 2025 Switzerland Report:

• By the end of 2025, MDPI had provided publishing services to 29,645 researchers at Swiss universities.

• More than 14,000 papers from Switzerland‑affiliated researchers have been published since 2021.

• In 2025 alone, 2,100 papers authored by 5,419 researchers from Swiss institutions appeared in 327 MDPI journals.

• A total of 2,817 Swiss scholars contributed to 9,656 review reports.

• MDPI collaborated with 1,574 Switzerland‑based academic editors in 2025, including 12 editors‑in‑chief.
